Rolling Element Bearing Looseness
Excessive clearance in a rolling element bearing will produce harmonics of 1X, usually in the range from 2X to 8X. Extreme looseness will commonly produce one-half order components, i.e., components at multiples of 0.5X. Looseness in other parts of the machine will also produce 1X harmonics and sometimes 0.5X harmonics, so this is not a conclusive sign of bearing clearance problems.
